Guaguancó

The guaguancó is a type of rumba , which originated in Cuba following the abolition of slavery on the island in 1886 . Guaguancó represents a fusion of several secular ritual known as Afro-Cuban rumba. The other two important varieties are the yambú and columbia. Guaguancó The dancers move to the rhythm of percussion instruments surrounded by a choir led by a soloist, performing a highly erotic choreography. Many if not most, of the compositions were anonymous guaguanco. The oldest from the late English colonial era on the island and are known as "rumba time in Spain." Despite its typical African rhythms, guaguancó reveals some English influences, especially flamenco and its manifestations rural tenths in the texts. According Mongo Santamaria, one of the most popular performers of this genre, the guaguancó arose when Afro-Cubans tried to sing flamenco.
